rain in Monrovia

Crossing a rain-swollen intersection on Benson Street, a carpenter plods through floodwaters to deliver door-frames by cart. So far, the storms are mostly short-lived, but can drop a lot of rain quickly. If your timing is lucky, you can find shelter for several minutes until the worst of the storm has passed. If not, once you’re wet, you’re wet.

Along the road to Bopolu, little forest remains. Most has been cleared for plantations, or burned in the production of charcoal. Bopolu, Liberia.

Gurley Street football

A goalie chills while waiting for close play. Gurley Street football makes creative use of water jugs and curbs to mark goal lines. Curbside goals let cars pass through the pitch. Cars and people on sidewalks beware the constant threat of getting beaned.

Abueta

Please stand here, at the top of the stairs, where light spills softly over the wall. Looking toward the street, Abueta glows in the warm light.

no bad day

Pushing off. Fishermen coming back from the sea stop to sell fresh lobsters before heading to port. When “God is in control” there can be no bad day. Marshall City, Liberia.

Special Forces

Mr. Special Forces, spotted walking the streets of Monrovia. I have recently heard stories from his acquaintances. He has a pretty devastating history. As a child soldier during Liberia’s “civil unrest” in the 90’s, he survived the experience unstable and unable to escape the horrors of war. He wanders the streets as if living in a war zone. I give him small-small and try to buy him water, but when I turn back, he has drifted away like an apparition. I hope I will see him again. Liberia.

crossing Benson Street

Crossing Benson Street in pouring rain, an assault on the senses. Curtains of water shimmering in the wind, a crack of thunder, soggy diesel, the sweetness of water dripping from my lip. Every person for themselves. Monrovia, Liberia.
