Monrovia lies along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, where the Mesurado River meets the sea. A shipping port at the mouth of the river was dredged in the 1940’s, while across the river, the community of West Point grew to more than 75,000 residents. This primarily fishing village was in the world spotlight in August of 2014 when it was cordoned off to try to arrest the spread of ebola. Today, a rising sea level encroaches and may in coming years reclaim this community.
