Heavy rains contribute to flooding in the streets of Monrovia. Plastic trash carried by floodwaters clog street drains, backing up the flow of water, especially in low-lying neighborhoods such as Waterside in Monrovia.
Pedestrians are challenged to find detours around flooded sidewalks, and ke-ke’s, motorbikes and cars plow slowly through shallow stretches until they can no longer maneuver. Shopkeepers are unable to conduct business. Additional problems like hidden potholes, dislodged manhole covers, and water contaminated by human waste contribute to a health and safety crisis.
